Last year I did not get out much, at least not much with a paintbrush in hand and I aim to remedy that this year. I think there were just too many rainy days and it got a bit dull painting fog and rain week after week. Hoping for some more sun this year but… Continue reading Plein Air Season Starting Soon
I’m pleased to announce that my pastel painting, “Hug Point” recently won an award from the Mid-Atlantic Pastel Society. My friend and fellow artist, Elizabeth Hood, and I tied for this award we found out yesterday. I’m extremely honored as the artists in the Mid-Atlantic Pastel Society are an extremely talented group of artists.
Me, and three friends, were given a unique opportunity to go out to Ditchley yesterday and paint. Ditchley will be the newest, top notch, must see destination in a few months — not just in the Northern Neck, but on the East Coast! All I can say is wow! And I should have take a… Continue reading The Cidery
Went late yesterday morning into the early afternoon to the Kayak Launch at Windmill Point in Lancaster County, VA to paint. There are gorgeous views of the swamp as you drive down to this site, but all the property is privately owned and they are not happy to have visitors stopping to paint along the… Continue reading Windmill Kayak Launch

But when something big really happens, it is somehow difficult to actually do that self-promotion thing that needs to be… Continue reading Blowing my Horn
I finally finished this today. I think. It’s 11X14 inches.
Incremental progress on the apples painting yesterday. Did a bit more work on the jar and started bringing in middle highlights. I also worked on the stems and leaves. I have also started working out the shadows. I’ve also started a little blending on the apples using the NuPastels. I don’t think this painting will have a… Continue reading Next Steps
Ice started forming on the creek the other day. This is the view from our back deck. Today, while much warmer, it is raining. So, for me it looks like I will be spending a lot more time indoors for the next little while. I do have a challenge out there for all my plein… Continue reading Winter Time
There are no progress shots of this painting, sorry. I kept forgetting to bring my camera upstairs to the studio when I went to work on it. In any case, I have definitely discovered that my painting skills are much stronger in the morning and this one was started and completed in about five sessions with… Continue reading Pizza Sauce Futures
