A Hinge on a Barn Door

DSC01276

My husband thinks I’m crazy for painting this. “Nobody wants to buy a painting of old wood and rust,” he said. He doesn’t understand that while it’s great when paintings sell, it’s not always about making a sale when an artist paints. Sometimes it’s just about learning something new, trying a technique, or simply practice.

I take lots of photos when I’m out painting plein air because I cannot always get outside to paint and it’s nice to have reference photos on hand from which to work.

The last few days have been much too hot for me to safely get out doors to paint (although I did spend two hours this morning power washing the back entrance deck). It was nice to stay indoors in the air conditioning and paint. In this painting I was trying to figure out how to 1. depict layers and layers of old peeling paint, mold on wood and just decaying old boards and rust. It’s not perfect, but I’m happy with it.

If you would like to buy it, it is available for purchase here. .
